Hampton Downs Round 1 2013

Friday Practice: This session went really well, it was mainly used for me to get settled in the car and get used to the track as I had never raced at Hampton Downs before and I hadn't raced since the Hamilton 400 in April last year so it helped shake off some of the rust. We were pretty happy with the car and our pace, claiming the second fastest time of the session only 0.018 off Brett 'The Scud' Rudd, but I knew we had more in the tank for Saturday so we were content with second fastest.

Saturday Qualifying: Brand new tires are there best in their first 3 laps so I knew I had to put a good time in quickly. My first hot lap was quick and it was 2 tenths under the lap record but I knew we still had more in the car so I pushed for one more and went another 2 tenths quicker, then the team decided we should bring the car in to save the tires. We qualified pole by 3 tenths of a second I was stoked, but race 1 is straight after qualifying so I knew I had to focus and get back in the zone.

Saturday Race 1;  Starting from the Pole, I got a good start and managed to keep the lead into turn 1, I then pinned my ears back and pulled away from the pack while they battled amongst themselves. I eventually won the race by 4 seconds, it was a great start to the season and an awesome achievement for the team.

Marble Draw: I pulled 6th position for the first marble draw grid.

Saturday Race 2; Starting from grid 6 I got another good start and by the time I was around the first corner I was up to 4th. The Ute had really good pace and by lap 3 I was in the lead. I pulled away from the field again to win by nearly 8 seconds and braking the lap record by 2 tenths of a second in the process.

Sunday Race 3; This race is reverse marble draw so I was starting from grid 7. I got off to a slow start, although I didn't lose or gain any positions off the start but I knew I just had to be patient as we did have the pace and didn't want to end up in any silly accidents. I slowly made my way through the field getting into 2nd position on the start of the last lap before going wide on turn one and falling back to third, which is where I finished. On my way through the field I smashed my own lap record I set the day before by 9 tenths of a second. The team and I were so stoked with the new lap record, and it is a testament to the skills of the Stoneman Race Tech team to give me a car capable of breaking lap records in race 3.

Sunday Race 4; The grid for the race is determined on points for the weekend so I was starting off the pole. I got another good start and kept the lead going into turn 1. There was a crash back further in the pack so the safety car was brought out. On the re-start I managed to keep the lead then stay ahead of the field to win the race, and win the Champion Spark Plugs "Sunday Champion" prize of $500.00 which was an awesome way to end a fantastic weekend for the team, winning the round and taking the lead in the championship.

I'd like to thank all our sponsors and supporters and a big thanks to Placemakers Cook Street, Brother International (NZ) Ltd, Autolink, AC Diggers, Fuchs and Stoneman Race Tech. Without their help we couldn't have done it.
