Pukekohe Round 7 The Finale

The format for the final round of the championship had slightly changed because of the number of support classes there were, this meant that we could only fit in 3 races instead of our normal 4. This also meant that qualifying would be worth full race point.

Qualifying: From our practice session I wasn't happy with how the ute was feeling, so we made a few changes for qualifying. I went out the gate and the ute felt good so after one warm up lap I just went for it. On the first of my flying laps I posted the 2nd fastest time, but on my second flying lap I did enough to take the top spot by setting a time equaling the lap record. This time then stood for the rest of the session, so we managed to qualify pole and collect full points.

Marble Draw: I drew grid 9.

Race 1: Starting from 9th, I got a good start and got into the rhythm of things. We had really good race pace and I managed to patiently make my way through the field. At the start of the last lap we were challenging for the lead and I put a move down the inside into turn one on Spence to take 1st place which I managed to hold until the flag. Winning this race meant we had won the championship. The team was ecstatic it was my proudest moment in motorsport to date, and to win the championship by winning a race coming from 9th on the grid was pretty special.

Race 2: Starting from 4th, I got another blinder start and was up to 2nd after the first corner, and coming up over the hill on the first lap I had already taken the lead. Once I had the lead I just pinned my ears back and drove away from the field winning the race by nearly 7 seconds.

Race 3: I was starting from pole position as we had collected maximum points for the weekend. This time I got an average start to the race and lost a position off the line to Spence, I got a good run on him coming up over the hill on the first lap and managed to pass him into turn one. Once again we had the pace to be able to pull away from the field but on lap 3 I got a call over the radio saying that I had a drive through penalty for losing traction on the dummy grid before the start of the race. Once we had taken the drive through this put me to the rear of the field, but luckily there was an incident and the safety car came out and allowed us to catch up to the rear of the field. With 3 laps remaining the safety came in and we were back racing, I fought my way through the field to 4th position across the line. This was a massive effort considering how far behind we were after the penalty.

This still gave us enough points to win the weekend. So the weekend and the championship were ours.

A huge thanks goes out to my sponsors Brother, PlaceMakers Cook Street, AC Diggers, Autolink, Holden and Fuchs. Thank You so much for giving me the opportunity to achieve this. And to Jake, Kirk and the team at Stoneman Race Tech, who ran the Utes that finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the championship. Without these boys and girls it wouldn't have been possible.

And last but not least thank you to all my family, friends and supporters who have been fantastic.
